Howard Borneman and John Klamp will not give up the search for Armco Steel Corp's first plant cornerstone. They say diggings at column 18 and 15 have found only rocks and mortar, with a remote chance of discovery during demolition or new office excavation.
Police arrested a man after finding carpeting taken from five to seven modular apartments being built by Cardinal Industries on S Main Street. The carpet matched the trunk in his car and pry marks on apartment doors aligned with a pry bar found under the seat. The suspect, intoxicated, was held for further questioning with charges not yet filed.
A fire caused by an overloaded electric cord damaged a two story duplex at 2725 2727 Plymouth Ave last night around 8 30. Tom Kennedy and Earl Nanamaker own the residence with 2000 in building damage and 1000 in contents. Firefighters vented the roof and no injuries were reported. Robert Centers owns the building at 2201 Highland St.
Fire crews responded to a broken electric wire at 804 Highland St and a grass fire at 4515 Nelson Rd. Brady McCoy 55 and Lt Connie Thomas 18 were treated at hospitals for non life threatening injuries. John Wills 61 suffered breathing difficulty and was admitted in serious condition at 2019 Tytus Ave. A coffee pot malfunction caused $25 damage at Garfield Elementary School.
Butler County commissioners vote 2 to 1 against Senate Bill 70 which would repeal the Ferguson Act and permit public employee strikes. The measure is criticized as risking budget strain and cited as dangerous, with opposition from the Association of Ohio and county officials. The board also approved transferring equipment from PRIDE Inc to the county mental health clinic.
Warren County commissioners received a letter from Harold Kramer agent for petitioners requesting withdrawal of a 52.6 acre annexation petition along Manchester Road to Middletown and cancellation of the Sept 23 hearing. Kramer cited Schweitzer death concerns and added territory complications plus a separate 19.2 acre release hearing Oct 23. Petitioners include the city of Middletown B F Sawyer and Son Inc Brenley Inc and Schweitzer.
Peter Laras 76 of 2901 Central Ave died from an apparent heart attack while driving on I-75 one mile south of Ohio 123. Car damage suggests autopsy to determine cause. Laras had a long civic and business career in Middletown including Mathews Cleaners and Head to Toe Service, and served in the Greek community and various organizations. Surviving wife Cleo, three daughters, and two grandchildren. Services set at Sts Helen and Constantine Greek Orthodox Church. Burial in Woodside Cemetery.
The Agriculture Department approved Prolate, a phosphorous compound, for dipping cattle affected or exposed to psoroptic cattle scabies. The approval becomes effective on Thursday.
