Presidents honor Columbus Day as Carter and Ford court blocs
Ford plans a wreath at a Washington Columbus statue while Carter attends Columbus Day services in Chicago and walks in the Columbus Day parade. The race pivots on ethnic and religious blocs as both claim stances on Eastern Europe, Middle East policy, and the Arab boycott. Carter criticizes Ford over Soviet influence and tax penalties. Ford seeks Southern Baptist support in Dallas with pastor W A Criswell endorsing him amid political friction.
