Partly cloudy skies forecast into midweek

The forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday with a 10 percent chance of rain. Tonight's low is expected in the upper 40s and Wednesday's high near 70. Hua Kuofeng Named Chairman of Chinese Communist Party

A Chinese government spokesman announced that Premier Hua Kuofeng has been appointed to succeed the late Mao Tse-tung as chairman of the Chinese Communist Party. Kyodo News reported from Peking with posters seen last week indicating the succession. The timing was to inform the party organization in advance.

Fiery crash kills 95 on Indian Caravelle at Bombay

In Bombay early today a Caravelle jet crashed after an engine fire during takeoff from Santa Cruz airport. Captain K D Gupta steered the burning airliner away from hangars before it crashed into a grassy area. 95 aboard were killed, most of them Indians.

Patricia Nixon recovering on schedule after stroke

Patricia Nixon wife of former President Richard Nixon is reported to be recovering at her San Clemente home on schedule from the summer stroke. A spokesman says she has not returned to Long Beach Memorial Hospital since July 23 after a 15 day stay.
