The swine flu immunization program starts with the first clinics opening tomorrow in the Middletown area. Over the next weeks additional clinics will offer free vaccines. President Ford and challenger Jimmy Carter prepare for the second debate in San Francisco at 9 30 pm EDT on foreign and defense policy. Topics include the Butz affair the Mayaguez incident GAO findings and U S responses with Pauline Frederick and a five member panel guiding questions.
Harley M Dirks, head of the Senate appropriations subcommittee staff, resigns after disclosure that a series of budget hearings for Labor and Welfare were fake. The transcript used written statements and even faked times, creating the illusion hearings occurred. The episode involves subcommittee members Len Magnuson and others, with financing for the 561 billion measure under scrutiny.
James F E Bostic Jr and other aides defend Earl L. Butz as not racist after his resignation over a racially charged remark. Butz, 67, said his exit is the price for a gross indiscretion and urged forward focus on policy and supporting the President.
