The second panel will quiz more sharply on Wednesday at the Palace of Fine Arts with Pauline Frederick moderating and NBC NYT NBC Baltimore Sun correspondents as panelists. The aim is to pin down positions rather than restate questions for voters watching at home.
United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Co stalled over secondary matters after major provisions of a three year contract were assembled. Negotiators recessed and planned to resume amid a three week national strike affecting 170000 workers in 22 states. The tentative accord includes wage hikes about 3 percent annually and increased paid time off as a key union concession.
Government economists expect third quarter growth around four percent. A weak report would bolster opponents of President Ford as unemployment remains near 7.9 percent. UAW Ford contract talks aim for early settlement, with ratification likely before a possible walkout ending by mid-October.
