City weather observer C. T. Morningstar reports September 1978 spanned extremes with highs of 93 on the 20th and lows of 43 on the 26th and 29th. Average temperature was 70, rainfall totaled .89 inches, far below the 2.43 inches of September 1977 and well above record low rainfall for the era.

Mystery SOS From Fathom Blue Raft Sparks Coast Guard Search

Coast Guard units and a Canadian vessel hunted for the 40 foot US registry raft Fathom Blue after a weak distress signal Saturday indicated three sick people and one death. The crew radioed that its home port and destination were unknown as searches covered vast areas 500 to 590 miles west-southwest of Cape Flattery.

British swimmer battles jellyfish and shark during Bahama to Florida swim
