Rep Helen H Fix of Ohio's 26th District urged Middletown attendees to back funding for schools while exploring alternatives such as permissive taxes and government driven budgets. She warned about eroding electoral trust if Issue 1 fails and urged public lobbying to influence legislation.
Police questioned Richard Cornmelies and Kathy Allen after they were found in Clara M. Thomas’s home on Weaver Avenue at 8 20 am with aunt in Atlanta on the line. The two were taken for investigation of aggravated burglary. No items reported missing.
A woman driver was injured when her car was struck at N Verity Parkway and Columbia Avenue at 10 am. Floyd Mitchell 72 of Dayton faced charges for failure to yield at a stop sign after pulling out from Columbia and hitting the southbound car driven by Dorothy Mills 54 of 1229 Ellen Drive. Mills was treated and released.
WESTCHESTER the Lakota school board prepares a noon Monday special meeting to decide on teacher pay. Negotiations rep Mrs Galen Shaffner says the panel's majority report calls for a 6.8 percent average increase plus fringe benefits, with teachers already receiving a 2.8 percent automatic raise in September for another year of service. The move hinges on the panel’s finding authored by James Duff and George Roberts, whom the board and teachers mutually selected.
Katherine Stephens 17 recovering from a diving accident near Trenton Franklin Road July 16 has regained walking after two months in hospital. Joni Eareckson, famed author and crusade speaker, called the recovery miraculous in a letter to the Hill's Department Store clerk. Katherine still wears a neck brace awaiting X-ray clearance on November 19 and hopes to resume activities beyond skating.
Local banks and savings institutions distribute a record 2,032,600 in Christmas Club savings checks to area residents. The 11,400 checks exceed last year's 9,500, with new to the market American Law & Loan and Home State Savings joining the program.
William P. Wilson of Middletown celebrated his 100th birthday with a family party at the Peru Home. Born in Kentucky, he moved to Middletown in the early 1900s and laid the first line in 1904. he later became a Baptist evangelist and moved to Indiana. He has 11 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, with relatives in Middletown, Cincinnati and beyond. A card from President Carter was highlighted at the celebration.
Butler County reports 200 construction permits in October with an estimated value of 4.56 million dollars, pushing 1977 year total to a county record of 44.39 million. Union Township leads activity with 73 permits worth 2.18 million while other townships report varied counts and values.
Monroe High School band boosters run the tenth annual fruit sale to fund fund band operations with district money plus proceeds from two sales. A vehicle turning from First Avenue onto Garfield Street hit the storage building in the 0 to 100 block at 8:50 a.m. causing a corner post to buckle and breaking boarded windows. The wagon remained drivable after the crash and fence damage was noted in the yard near Faith United Methodist Church.
