Prime Minister Fidel Castro proposed trading more than 1,000 inmates from the April 17 invasion for 500 American bulldozers. He told a Havana audience that if captives are not ransomed they will toil building trenches and fortifications. Castro linked the swap to President Kennedy and warned criminals from the Batista era would not be released. He urged increased agricultural output and preservation of pork, arguing the revolution’s work is only beginning.

In Columbus Ohio four young children perished when a six room house caught fire likely starting in a downstairs middle room heated by a space heater. Their mother Loretta Jones and other occupant Chester Francis survived the blaze.
Five anti Communist Laotian groups left for Geneva to bolster the right wing royal government in opposition to the Pathet Lao at the East West conference in Laos.
