A Minuteman missile veered off course during its second test from Cape Canaveral and was destroyed by the range safety officer about 90 seconds after liftoff. The 58 foot solid fuel rocket disappeared into a thick plume and broke apart over the Atlantic as plans for a 1962 deployment moved forward.
United Nations forces from Malaysia and India guard a 200 mile stretch between Kabalo and Albertville in north Katanga. The UN cites tribal friction and risk of civil war, noting improved peace after troop deployment while Katanga President Tshombe’s earlier offensive waned.
At the 14 nation Laos talks in Geneva Canada led a push for self contained transport and communications for the Laos cease fire. Gromyko and Menon backed providing planes helicopters cars and trucks to empower the U N backed control commission. The Western powers aim to remove North Vietnamese influence and ensure the truce has its own logistics and authority.
In Temple City California Barry J Babcock a nine year old Little League player known as Tiger dies after a pitched ball strikes his chest. His father Jack B Babcock expresses grief and says the family does not blame anyone and wants the league to continue. An autopsy failed to determine the cause of death.
In Laos the right wing royal government reversed its stance and insisted cease-fire details come before coalition talks. Pathet Lao and neutralists lament unavoidable incidents as factions agree only to reconvene Monday, with no progress on forming a provisional government.
The forecast calls for mild weekend weather with a high near 74 tomorrow and overnight low in the 50s. Temperatures over the next five days should hover around the normal high of 78 and low of 55. Precipitation is expected to be light with general rains Sunday or Monday. Thursday's high reached 66 and overnight low 46.
