Nixon asks Congress for election reforms commission

Nixon approves wiretaps on officials to curb security breach

The New York Times reports President Nixon authorized wiretaps on more than a dozen government officials including Kissinger aides Daniel I. Davidson Anthony Lake and Winston Lord. The taps began in 1969 after a Cambodia bombing disclosure. The White House confirmed the authorization stating it was a national security matter and approved in individual cases by the attorney general. The Times noted the taps were productive.

Zambian Troops Fire On Tourists At Victoria Falls

Zambian troops opened fire near the Victoria Falls pumping station, killing at least one Canadian woman and injuring two others, including an American man. The U S Embassy identified the wounded American as John Caruthers of Troy Ohio, who was with his wife. one Canadian woman was killed instantly and the other wounded, with her body not recovered.
