Crippled Skylab, short on electrical power, continues to orbit Cape Kennedy as engineers seek methods to salvage three manned missions in America's first orbital laboratory.
Gold rose over five dollars as the dollar sank on European markets amid fears of a new monetary crisis. The same period saw NASA delay the Skylab 1 launch to Sunday due to power shortages after a shield mishap damaged solar panels, threatening a 28 day orbital mission.
Cape Kennedy officials report a torn aluminum micrometeorite shield ripped from Skylab delayed the first mission. Two solar power panels failed to unfold. NASA postponed manned launch to Sunday. Astronauts Conrad Jr Weitz and Kerwin would have flown a 28 day mission. Space walk to fix panels deemed too dangerous and unsuited to training.
Senate digest quotes L. Patrick Gray III saying no FBI link was found between White House and Watergate wiretapping. He also says John W. Dean III relayed FBI reports to President Nixon and he was unaware of any coverup. Gray quit April 27. Dean fired three days later.
CIA Deputy Director Vernon A. Walters testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that Haldeman Ehrlichman and Dean were heavily involved in attempts to misuse the CIA for a Watergate coverup. reports link Walters to FBI witness delays and missing wiretap records tied to the White House.
A civic group in Cincinnati abandons plans to save the Union Terminal from demolition after failing to raise 1.75 million by the deadline. Alfred A. Moore says the group will accept Greater Cincinnati Airport’s offer to move the terminal’s 14 mosaic murals, with 265000 raised so far. City council meeting holds potential delaying action.
Frost is forecast for the Middletown area with overnight lows in the mid-30s. Tomorrow will be cloudy with highs in the 60s. Yesterday's high reached 65 and the low 35. Details on page 6.
The United States proposed another visit to Hanoi on Friday to discuss procedures for returning the remains of 23 Americans who died as POWs. North Vietnam said they would respond later after a five hour visit by a U S team found 20 graves moved 35 miles from Hanoi. Thieu warned peace hinges on communist willingness to renounce military moves and negotiate.
About 70 police searched for a sniper whose bullets traced a path from a wooded area to a highway. He killed Abraham Saltzman, 54, and seriously wounded truck driver John Roger Mott, 22, as another car was struck but its driver escaped injury. The gunman, described as in his 20s, fired a high powered rifle in a brief rampage Monday evening.
The White House dismissed a Santa Ana Register claim that Nixon used unreported 1968 funds to buy his California home. Press secretary Ronald Ziegler called the report a total fabrication and said Nixon has provided full accounting of assets, with San Clemente details previously outlined by the White House.
