Refugees adjusting to American life

The first Vietnamese refugees began new lives in the United States as they settled in Camp Pendleton California and Ft Chaffee Arkansas. Leaders and communities pledged support while the government reported over 100000 refugees and 8000 already in the country.

Hopeful signs emerge as economy shows rebound hints

The April unemployment rate rose to 8.9 percent with 8,176,000 jobless in a 92.3 million civilian labor force. Officials say early indicators suggest recovery may begin, while Greenspan forecasts a rebound between moderate and vigorous in the second half. Auto makers plan price hikes on 1976 models. Texaco raises wholesale gasoline prices by two cents per gallon.

Middletown Weather: Showers Then Mild Weekend Outlook

Forecasters expect showers in the Middletown area tonight with lows in the low 50s. Sunday will see highs in the mid 60s with more showers possible. The extended outlook calls for fair skies Monday and a chance of showers Tuesday and Wednesday.

Final refugee ships leave for Subic Bay evacuation

A U.S. naval task force ship unloading evacuees at Subic Bay in the Philippines began transferring about 70,000 South Vietnamese refugees. A Navy spokesman said all evacuees who wanted to board were being assisted as the operation continued.

Lost convoy evacuees cross border into Thailand

Nearly 600 people from the lost convoy crossed into Thailand after a two week Cambodian ordeal. About 120 more foreigners remained in Phnom Penh with no reasons given. Red Cross said others expected to leave Phnom Penh in three to four days.

Millions in Equipment Left Behind After Hue Retreat

In Hue Vietnam the Hue estuary is littered with about $100 million in US military gear as ARVN forces flee by sea. A Saigon Revolutionary Government spokesman says 103,000 ARVN personnel captured have been released home. Around Hue, 600 burned vehicles dot the highway and estuary as former ARVN drivers work under new army officers to restore tanks, armored cars, and trucks, including M48 tanks with shells visible, while salvage crews attempt engine repairs to move additional tanks to the highway.

Ohio fruit crop may be largest in years says expert

Ohio fruit farmers expect a strong season with apples possibly 15 percent above last year’s 135 million pounds and peaches up to 28 million pounds. Extension horticulturist Elden J. Stang notes past frosts have damaged crops but current conditions look favorable though late frosts could still hurt blossoms. Major growing regions lie in the north east and central, with frost-free date in the north May 20.

Two Student Drivers Die in Cleveland Lesson Crash

In Cleveland on Friday two high school pupils Harold Robinson aged 17 and Linda Denise Hill aged 19 were killed while riding in a school driver education car. The training vehicle, carrying two pupils and a driver instructor, collided with a car driven by 38 year old John Watkins. Robinson was hurled into the street and Hill was tossed through a rear window as the car spun several times after impact.
