Jobless near peak as April unemployment tops eight percent

The April unemployment rate rose to 8.9 percent with 8,176,000 out of work, while total employment increased by 240,000 to 84.1 million and the labor force grew to 92.3 million. Adult males drove much of the April employment gain amid broad job losses.

Car Makers Face First Quarter Losses In 1975

Chrysler posts a record 94.1 million loss for January March. Ford suffers 158 million pretax deficit with net 10.6 million loss after credits. General Motors remains the sole profitable major maker with 85 million earnings. AMC hints at at least 10 million loss before taxes as results loom next week.

Cargo door of C5 crash recovered in South China Sea

U S Navy divers recovered the rear cargo door of the C5 transport crash near Saigon that killed Vietnamese orphans and escorts. MAC officials said a full investigation continues with 155 dead and 175 survivors. no final passenger list or cause yet. The door and sealing material were sent to San Antonio for Air Force analysis.

The government proposes cutting welfare payments from mothers who refuse to help locate the father of their children while rewarding cooperation with cash incentives up to 20 dollars a month in child support.
