World Bank marks McNamara decade with rapid growth and shift
Robert S. McNamara celebrates 10 years as World Bank president amid a rise to 2,533 employees from 100 countries and a lending pace of 8.5 billion annually. He redirected aid to rural and urban projects aiding the poor, including population-control measures, while facing congressional criticism over loans to left or right regimes and arrears in U.S. pledges.

Moisture improves Great Plains erosion outlook
The Agriculture Department reports wind erosion in the 10 Great Plains states has fallen to 43 percent of last year thanks to better moisture. Through February about 1.66 million acres were damaged by wind since last November, with Texas hampering most emergency tillage efforts at 84 percent of 950,880 acres. The USDA notes conditions vary by region with southern plains bearing the bulk of damage and emergency tillage concentrated in Texas.
