Forty Lenten days focus shifts to action and renewal

George W. Cornell reports Lent's 40 day period now emphasizes positive reform over mere fasting. Scripture urges justice and feeding the hungry, with Lent seen as penitence, rededication, and spiritual renewal preparing for Easter. The 40 day length originated in early Christianity and reflects biblical timeframes, including Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness and related events.
