Allied reports say Viet Cong troops invaded Ca Mau and shelled about 40 towns and bases across 40 areas. At Cam Ranh Bay the air base was attacked for the first time, with minor damage and no casualties.
President Johnson urged union leaders to put aside companywide bargaining and settle on economic issues first in the 26 union and four producer talks over the long copper strike. He warned the walkout harms U.S. prosperity and Vietnam supply, as Kennecott Anaconda Phelps Dodge and ASARCO resist broader bargaining.
In London the pound fell to a new low as strong gold demand persisted. The pound opened at 2.3975 dollars, closed near 2.3997, with the Bank of England stepping in to support the currency as gold fixed around 35.19 dollars.
In Wilmington Delaware a U S District Court judge refused a bid to bar reporters from a pretrial hearing citing the Reardon report as not law The move sought to limit pretrial disclosures by courts lawyers and police and could risk contempt for newspapers printing certain details Judge Wright praised press cooperation.
Five San Juan hotels closed their beaches as oil from the Ocean Eagle slicked sands extending toward west beaches. Thousands of tourists left the shores as the Liberian tanker spilled six million gallons and split near San Juan Bay. Touring officials say some cancellations occurred but no major drop in visitors yet. Marine biologists warn of a serious ongoing problem despite sand removal efforts.
The Miami Valley forecast calls for mainly cloudy skies with tonight and Wednesdays highs in the 40s and 20s to 30s tonight.
