Solzhenitsyn Wins Publication After Censorship Battle
The Soviet Writers' Union approved publication of Solzhenitsyn's novel The First Circle and the short story The Cancer Ward after two years of confiscation. He had circulated a letter at the national writers congress urging an end to literary censorship and defense for attacked authors. Informed sources say 79 Soviet writers sent a petition urging open debate, with the union promising Solzhenitsyn permission and travel funds to publish abroad.
