In Pittsburgh AP report the steel strike threat eases as United Steelworkers Union considers a 78 cent offer for a three year contract. Local leaders weigh ratification power while industry proposes wage raises totaling 45 cents plus bonuses and enhanced pensions.
Prague reports a Czech Slovak general linked with Soviet officers as Soviet and Czechoslovak Communist leaders resume talks near the border. CTK said the two delegations exchanged views while no dramatic outcome was announced, amid Moscow backed demands to curb liberalization and restore strict party censorship.
US forces suffered two ground defeats with 24 Americans killed while only five enemy bodies were found. A Marine unit from the 7th Regiment fought a day-long battle south of Da Nang. 20 Marines died, 40 wounded. North Vietnamese soldiers ambushed air cavalry near Hue. four airmen were killed and 25 wounded. In the air, a Navy pilot downed a MIG17 over North Vietnam. four MIGs were challenged by F8 Crusaders near Vinh.
A sniper wounded two police officers and three other officers plus three civilians were injured as violence erupted after a Black Panther rally in Seattle’s Negro central area. Police used tear gas and 100 officers sealed the area amid firebombs and gasoline reports after two Panther members were arrested.
Eight Peoria police officers were hit by buckshot in a melee after rock and brick throwing escalated to gunfire and firebombings in a Negro neighborhood northeast of downtown Peoria. Five officers were treated and released, three admitted but not seriously injured. Four men and three women, all Negroes, were arrested as off duty officers and state police were summoned to restore calm.
In Gary Indiana police with riot units and 180 state officers quelled three nights of disorder arresting 64 as Mayor Hatcher plans a 14 member Negro community liaison commission and tightens curfew while police say youth gangs have been checked.
The Middletown Miami Valley area foresees partly cloudy and warmer conditions tonight with scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Wednesday will reach the 70s to 80s with tonight's low in the 60s. yesterday’s high was 79 and this morning’s low 53.
