Pope Paul VI prohibits the contraceptive pill and other chemical and mechanical birth control methods for Catholics worldwide. He states every act of intercourse must be open to procreation and signals disapproval of the rhythm method as regular practice, ruling out future acceptance of contraception by the church.
Viet Cong infiltrators in loincloths attacked the Tuy Hoa air base in South Vietnam and destroyed two four engine C130 transports while badly damaging an F100 fighter bomber. About nine Viet Cong were killed and one American wounded. The raid follows similar attacks on Udorn and Da Nang bases, with further aircraft losses reported. U.S. defenses at bases were strengthened as authorities warned of continuing raids.
Police Chief James Hilton blamed dissension among Negro youth gangs for two nights of disorders in Gary Indiana's Central District. The violence began Sunday with firebombing sniper fire and looting and resumed Sunday night as police sealed a four-block zone with 10 patrol cars. 110 Negroes were arrested as 550 Indiana National Guardsmen stood by and 90 Indiana state policemen replaced Cook County riot squads.
In Prague and near the Soviet border, leaders of Czechoslovak and Soviet Communist parties begin historic talks on Moscow demands that Prague curb reformist directions. Alexander Dubcek travels with 40 Czechoslovak leaders while Brezhnev leads the Soviet delegation amid security measures and cautious assurances of Warsaw Pact unity.
The talk, likely one or two days, will address issues raised by Moscow-led hard-line parties in their War saw letter. They accuse Czechoslovakia of facing a counterrevolution, the same charge that led Soviet tanks to crush Hungary in 1956.
A top level bargaining session delayed the United Steelworkers Executive Committee meeting to Tuesday as I. W. Abel and R. Conrad Cooper wage high level talks over theBasic Steel Industry Conference during a contract nearing expiration.
The Middletown and Southwest Ohio region today will be mostly sunny and cool with fair conditions tonight. Lows drop to the low 50s, after yesterday’s high of 83 and this morning’s low of 54. A .3 inch rainfall was recorded in the Valley area on Saturday.
Robert Read and his son Timon swam to an unmanned 280 foot barge on San Francisco Bay, dropped the anchor, and claimed the vessel as salvage from the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Read, 52, asserts ownership based on the discovery on a Friday.
