Sharp June CPI Jump Fueled by Food and Gas Prices
The Labor Department reported an eight tenths rise in the Consumer Price Index in June, double May’s gain and the largest monthly jump since last September. Food costs rose 1.5 percent with grocery prices up 1.9 percent, while meat and fruits and vegetables climbed. Gasoline rose about 3 percent to near 57 cents a gallon regular and 60 cents for premium, with further increases since data collection. Real spendable earnings fell 0.4 percent in June and were down 0.4 percent for the year, as the CPI stood at 160.6 percent of the 1967 base. Inflation for the year ending June reached 9.3 percent, just shy of last year’s pace. Administration economists were surprised by the June surge.
