Apollo Soyuz Return Marks Joint Space Mission

The Soyuz cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov landed safely in a flat south central Russia plain at 6 51 a m EDT ending a three day stay in space while Apollo astronauts remain aboard for further exploration. Televised footage showed the descent as helicopters tracked the capsule and the craft touched down after a brief hover above the surface.

Weather and space rescue update from Middletown and Soyuz landing

Forecasts show clear to fair skies for Middletown with lows in the low 60s and highs near 84 to mid 80s through Friday. The weekend saw 26 inch rain. cosmonauts Leonov and Kubasov landed beside the Soyuz capsule and were reported in very good condition as Mission Control confirms a 6.2 mile landing from the target point. Smithsonian scientists say Mt Chimborazo in Ecuador sits farther from the earth's center than Mt Everest, by about 7 058 feet, though Everest remains higher above sea level. Calculations use 15 years of satellite data. Everest is 29 028 feet above sea level.

French Invasion Report Sparks Alarm Over Comoro Islands

In Kampala, the Organization of African Unity said French troops and battleships were invading the Comoro islands in the Indian Ocean and threatening to dismember the self declared independent nation. A Paris official denied any landing or warships in the area. OAU official Peter Onu said French warships surrounded Mayotte as troops reportedly landed.
