Last bald ibises cling to survival in Birecik Turkey
In Birecik on the Euphrates a small flock of bald ibises faces extinction with dwindling numbers from 1,300 in 1953 to 25 pairs in 1972. Ornithologist Udo Hirsch works with the World Wildlife Fund to widen the ledge and guard eggs from human threats while locals encroach with houses and rubbish. The bird’s decline traces to insecticide use and habitat loss, though recent ledge improvements boost egg survival this year.
