Sen. Sam J. Ervin Jr. defends televised Watergate inquiry quoting Richard Nixon on the function of investigations. He says the probe is crucial to the welfare of the nation as questions arise about its purpose and conduct.
Ervin invoked a statement from President Nixon's 1962 book Six Crises as the best reflection on congressional investigations. Nixon described the 1948 inquiry into alleged Communist activity in government as essential to national interest and to the future effectiveness of oversight.
Senator Ervin led questioning as the Watergate committee pressed White House aide Richard Moore and former Nixon lawyer Herbert Kalmbach. Moore testified Nixon knew nothing of the break in until March 21, and Dean III had first told him. Ervin called the investigation crucial to national welfare.
