Judge Charles Klein denounced the jury as soft headed after Percy Favors, 17, was acquitted of rape. He said the panel freed a vicious criminal despite police testimony and suspect statements made without counsel, calling the jurors’ actions a cause of street crime.
Prague reports convoys of Soviet troops started moving out of Czechoslovakia toward bases in Poland East Germany and the Soviet Union. Officials say the move reduces immediate tension though Moscow and its East European allies appeared poised for new pressure after six months of upheaval.
The Warsaw Pact forces around Prague start pulling out amid a standoff with Prague leadership over liberal reforms. Soviet leaders including Brezhnev and Podgorny arrive in Warsaw for high level talks as 6000 to 24000 troops prepare to depart with no completion date set.

United States Air Force B52s dropped hundreds of tons of bombs on supply storage and troop concentrations in provinces around Saigon while allied ground forces moved closer to the city. Michael V. DiSalle says Edward M. Kennedy will be placed in nomination for the Democratic presidential ticket in a one man move. DiSalle informed more than 1700 delegates and members of Congress by letter detailing his plan and noting he has not discussed it with the Kennedy family or party leaders.
A charter pilot landed in Key West with an armed hijacker aboard after diverting the plane to Cuba. The suspect, Leonard Bendicks of Williamsport, Pa., a former reading instructor, was identified by Radio Havana and reportedly had his contract terminated last month.

North Vietnam threatened Sunday trial and execution for the Alliance of National Democratic and Peace Forces leaders, calling them traitors. Radio Hanoi said these leaders, deemed treasonous by a Saigon military court, would face a people's court and full penalties. The Saigon government and U.S. Mission in Saigon label the Alliance a Communist front.
In Chu Lai Vietnam CWO Don Sewell 22 and Capt Patricia Mann 24 married in the Navy chapel after Sewell earned the Silver Star rescuing wounded GIs. The ceremony featured a Bowie knife cake cut and jungle tools for ice cream as 200 guests celebrated.
