The Post Office Department orders 347 small branches closed and cuts Saturday and Sunday window hours at first and second class offices. Aug 2 and Aug 30 closures target 250 and 97 fourth class post offices with further plans to drop city Saturday delivery and curb new apartment routes. The move stems from manpower limits under the new tax bill.
The Collinsville Ohio fourth class post office in Butler County will close August 30 as part of a nationwide economy drive that will shutter 97 more offices on that date and cut 83 238 positions by filling only three of four vacancies. The plan removes Saturday and Sunday window service at many offices and delays rural route vacancies to assess consolidation.
About 3,000 Soviet troops will start leaving Prague today after a request for withdrawal without delay. Kosygin, in Sweden, dismissed Czech fears of a delay, saying the worry lies with Western press. Polish troops also prepared to depart.

Marine Sgt. William Charlie Horton, 92, the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal by Gen. Leonard M. Chapman. The ceremony recalled Horton’s 1900 Boxer Rebellion citation, described by a Marine spokesman as an oversight. Horton advised in a sharp remark about China, saying to leave them alone.
