Butterfield Linked With CIA While White House Liaison

Former presidential aide Alexander Butterfield, who exposed Nixon’s taping system, served as a CIA contact officer during his White House tenure. Col. L. Fletcher Prouty said he provided the information to Congress, with Prouty again before investigators.

Main Street blaze injures four. $22,000 damage

A two alarm fire at 900 S. Main St. injured four firefighters and caused $22,000 in damage to a nine unit apartment building. Fire spread into roof compartments, requiring roof access and several roof choppings to control. Residents escaped unharmed as Red Cross assists the family.

Middletown Weather Forecast Skies To Clear Sunday

Partly cloudy conditions with low in the mid-50s and highs near 70 are forecast for the Middletown area tonight. Yesterday there was a high of 83 and a low of 52 with 21 inches of rain recorded. The extended outlook calls for fair skies Sunday and a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday.

Kissinger says progress made in nuclear pact talks in Geneva

Secretary of State Kissinger and Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko report progress in negotiating a 10 year U S Soviet treaty on limiting underground nuclear tests and offensive weapons. They support a July 30 Helsinki security summit despite Malta withholding agreement and discuss MIRV counting, inspections, and Middle East issues. Progress noted though no final deal yet.

Armco’s 75th Birthday Marked With Silkscreen Heritage

A 1915 photo of Cahill's crew in Armco's gas production department is featured in a 75th anniversary supplement. The Journal recounts Armco's 75 years in Middletown and prints a silk screen reproduction of the crew. Extra copies go on sale, and a second keepsake uses July 12 1900 Middletown Daily Signal pages about the cornerstone ceremony.
