An armored Purolator van bound for banks in East Texas and Louisiana overturned on Texas 149 near Beckville sending sacks of cash into the wind. A bystander, off duty officer Charles Cammack, armed with a shotgun, joined the scramble as coins and bills scattered.
Ohio Attorney General William J. Brown filed a federal suit accusing Blue Shield and the Ohio State Medical Association and its subsidiary Ohio Medical Indemnity Inc. of fixing physician fees across 83 of 88 Ohio counties. The case seeks to halt anticompetitive activity and force divestiture of control of OMI by OSMA.
Secretary of State Kissinger meets French officials to restart talks between Arab oil producers and industrial nations. He then plans to fly to Geneva to discuss the Middle East and nuclear weapons with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko.
Inside Kissinger reports a new energy conference could begin within two months with separate commissions on energy and raw materials by year end. A three-pronged oil approach was agreed by major consuming nations. Cher announces divorce from rock musician Gregg Allman after nine days of marriage citing irreconcilable differences. Spokesmen describe a misunderstanding with plans to reconcile. Allman is in Macon, Georgia, recording an album while Cher has left for an undisclosed location.
Ralph Fulp of Chino Valley contracted bubonic plague and fought for weeks under Dr. James Favata’s care. Despite severe shock and tissue loss, Fulp survived though will lose most fingers and some toes. Arizona reported seven nationwide cases this year, five in the state, all nonfatal, with no clear source identified.
Denis Hills, 61, the British lecturer sentenced to death for calling Idi Amin a village tyrant, was freed by Amin after a meeting with British Foreign Secretary James Callaghan in Kampala. Hills was flown to London from Entebbe aboard a Royal Air Force plane.
Armco Steel Corp leaders W. W. Sebald and Charles Hook served hot dogs at Sunset Park during a Saturday 50th anniversary observance.
