Washington officials warn a genuine housing boom remains distant despite a 2000 tax credit. The Federal Home Loan Bank Board says new home sales still fail to cut the large backlog of unsold homes, noting starts stay high relative to sales.
A 5000 gallon leak from an underground Hanford tank was detected by radiation monitors. The diluted waste has only reached 14 feet below the tank and the water table is 144 feet deep, with remaining waste being moved to another facility.
Ashland Oil Inc. says the nearly $99,000 received from the Central Intelligence Agency was not for domestic political donations. The Kentucky refiner disclosed $98,968 in five CIA payments over 42 years ending March 1973, while admitting more than $700,000 in illegal corporate donations to Nixon, Humphrey, and other candidates.
Reporter Jay Gourley of the National Enquirer collected Kissinger trash from his Georgetown home amid Secret Service scrutiny. The Enquirer notes no documents were found but cites possible private details while Shadowed by CIA funding questions tied to Ashland Oil and a Senate probe led by Sen. Church.

Twenty Lucasville penitentiary inmates faced escape and attempted escape charges after a May 18 prison breakduring a guard strike. Indicted are Ronnie Carter 26 Cleveland and Mike Patterson 27 Hamilton two of three escapees who breached the fence Patterson captured hours later Carter caught next day Edward Nesbitt 22 Cleveland was killed by deputies during the manhunt.
Soviet Ambassador Dobrynin and wife will view an American Apollo launch in Cape Canaveral while U S Ambassador Stoessel visits Baikonur to witness a Soviet Soyuz liftoff. Each will be first Russian and first American officials at these launches. The unmanned docking is set for 50 hours combined flight.
