President Ford defended energy proposals in a broadcast but appeared to overstate gasoline price impacts from a $1 per barrel import fee and to understate U.S. dependence on foreign oil in 1985. Officials say the fee would raise gasoline by about one cent per gallon.

Homer Salter Jr., 23, manager of a Blakely nightclub, is jailed in Fort Gaines without bond on four counts of murder in the four men shot to death at a grocery near Bluffton Georgia. A GBI official said a hearing would occur within 48 hours.
A rain chance is expected tonight and Saturday in the Middletown area with overnight lows in the upper 30s and tomorrow's highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Yesterday's high was 38 and the overnight low 26. The outlook calls for cloudy skies Sunday and fair skies Monday and Tuesday.
