Barge wedged against dam sparks danger of explosion

A breaking tow of 17 barges on the Ohio River left one barge stuck against Markland Dam near Vevay Indiana. Airliner catches fire after nose gear collapse at LAX

A Trans World Airlines jet from New York to Los Angeles aborted landing in fog at LAX. Fire gutted the interior of the $12 million jet after nose gear collapsed and sparks ignited. Six passengers were injured. two taken to Marina Mercy Hospital, four to Daniel Freeman Hospital in satisfactory condition.

Three Arrested in Getty Kidnapping Case in Italy

Police in Rome say three men are jailed for kidnapping J. Paul Getty III with two captured in Calabria and one in Rome. A ransom of 2.7 million dollars was paid for his release and a banknote cache likely from the ransom was recovered. Domenico Barbino, 27, an orderly in Rome, and Giuseppe Mammoliti, 37, were among those arrested.
