A high US official said the plan to separate Israeli and Egyptian forces along the Suez Canal is about 90 percent complete. No remaining obstacle is a gut issue after Kissinger's talks with Egypt.
Abba Eban said after talks with Henry Kissinger that some progress was made toward disengagement with Egypt but notable points remain to be clarified. Egyptian papers warned a near disengagement agreement with precise provisions and timetables for troop movements and weapon withdrawals. Meir’s Likud government faced internal criticism, accusing the administration of a one sided retreat.
The American Petroleum Institute reports a 12.2 percent weekly decline in imports and gasoline stocks at a midsummer level, while critics in a House subcommittee question data credibility. Rep Silvio Conte joins calls that the energy crisis is overstated and prices rise on revenue, as Petro leum Institute figures suggest shortages could be covered by existing stocks.
