The traffic congestion was less severe than expected in some areas as some commuters stayed home after a one day rail stoppage. All passenger train service was halted while some freight trains kept running and coal miners threatened to escalate their slowdown under pressure on wages facing Prime Minister Edward Heath.
Franklin attorney and city solicitor Frank Stan Kolb announced a 12:30 press conference at the Warren County Board of Elections amid talk he will file to run in the 73rd District. A close ally said he plans to resign from the elections board and file nominating petitions. Kolb chairs the Warren County Democratic Central Committee. The 73rd district currently seats Corwin Nixon, a Republican Conservative.
Secretary of State Kissinger presented Egypts counter proposals on withdrawing forces from the Suez front. He said Israeli leaders found constructive aspects in the plan after a two hour session with Deputy Premier Allon Foreign Minister Eban and Defense Minister Dayan. A map showed Egyptians insistence on holding positions on the east bank and a buffer zone for UN peacekeepers between the two armies.
Gov. Gilligan will address the 110th General Assembly in a State of the State message focused on energy issues. He plans to seek emergency authority to implement federal measures, including a 55 mph national speed limit to protect highway funds, and to propose a seven member energy board with appointees and agency heads.
Aboard the Amtrak Texas Chief en route from Chicago to Houston 115 passengers, 45 people were injured when the train derailed near Ardmore Oklahoma. Cars including the dining car toppled as fires erupted and workers freed trapped passengers.
Washington AP The Nixon administration opposes a former National Security Council official viewing wiretap documents about surveillance of his phone. Morton Halperin, ex Kissinger aide, sues Kissinger and others for damages stemming from the taps. The government offered to let a judge review the records as taps ran May 12 1967 to Feb 10 1971.
The U S government began a nationwide petroleum allocation system with non coupon rationing for major products except retail gasoline. Thermostats will be lowered, service stations face reduced gasoline, airlines trim flights, and essential services receive priority. Hardship exceptions defined.
Nine river barges broke from moorings on the Ohio River near Markland Dam in Indiana and drifted toward the dam. Some sank or lodged against the structure while police warned fumes from unknown chemicals spread across the river. injuries were not immediately known.
Cloudy skies and upper 30s lows forecast for Middletown tonight. Wednesday brings highs in the upper 50s to low 60s with more clouds.
