Chautauqua’s Rise From Religious Camp Meetings to Park Complex
The Chautauqua began as religious camp meetings at the Franklin Fairgrounds and grew into a permanent religious educational and recreation center. Builders acquired land to create a park with tent cities, cottages, a two story hotel, and a summer post office. A three span iron bridge linked river transport, and Cabin Row added dining, roller rink, bowling, swimming pool, and boat docks attracting patrons by 1909.
