The president outlines the budget for the year ending June 30 1948 highlighting national defense and foreign aid as leading expenditures. The Army transport Joseph V. Connolly caught fire early today and was abandoned by its crew of 43 nine hundred miles east of New York. The S S Morrison R Waite reached the scene and searched for lifeboats. No injuries or deaths were reported. The Connolly carried 5000 empty caskets to return war dead from Europe and sailed from New York for Antwerp January 8. Built in 1945, it brought 6246 war dead into New York last October 26.

Charles F Baunt, 20, of Cincinnati, was turned over to the Hamilton County Sheriff for a Cincinnati area crash. The remaining trio fled Germantown on foot, linked to Salem West Virginia grand larceny and breaking and entering.
A Southwind passenger train of the Atlantic Coast Line derailed after a broken rail in Pinco ck, Georgia. William Jones, 55, is in serious condition at General Hospital after striking Detective Jerome Helton with a wine bottle and grappling during a confrontation with a forgery suspect. The suspect Lee Allen Dean, identified by Night Police Chief George Pearcy, escaped but was later captured. Jones appeared to have no link to Dean.
