Doctors Run Blue Shield Under FTC Probe

The Federal Trade Commission launched a nonpublic investigation into Blue Shield to see if physician control of the 72 million member program reduces competition and raises health costs. FTC will study all 71 Blue Shield plans and the National Association of Blue Shield Plans as physicians’ influence and its fiscal impact are examined. Blue Shield officials said they would cooperate and defended physician involvement, stressing no illegality is indicated.

Three escapees flee Warren County jail after window breach

Three men broke an unbreakable window and breached a 10 foot fence with barbed wire while monitored by TV cameras. Deputies found the day room empty about 7 p.m. and a massive manhunt followed with roadblocks, a patrol helicopter, and local police assistance. Two men were later arrested for driving the escapees to Dayton. Suspects are Tommy Walker 21 of Knoxville Tennessee awaiting auto theft and parole violation, Glenn Williams 17 of Fairfield charged with aggravated robbery, and Steve Plummer 17 of Lebanon awaiting presentence after auto grand larceny and criminal trespassing convictions. Williams and Plummer are adults. The jail features 20 surveillance screens with no camera in the day room cited by deputies.
