In New Hampshire, Ford edges Reagan by hairbreadth while Carter sweeps a Democratic victory. Carter’s strong showing makes him frontrunner as Ford and Reagan brace for a long nomination fight with state-by-state votes through June.
Ford narrowly defeated Reagan in New Hampshire with 51 percent to 49 percent as 97 percent of votes counted. Carter surged in the Democratic field with about 30 percent, Udall 24 percent, Bayh 16 percent, signaling a strong frontrunner path for Carter while Ford called the win a great springboard toward the national race. Reagan acknowledged a strong campaign but conceded the loss and noted his best effort in the North state.
Democrat primary totals show Carter with 22 650 votes about 30 percent, Udall 18 207 about 24 percent, Bayh 12 316 about 16 percent, Harris 8 639 about 11 percent, Shriver 6 516 about 9 percent as 99 percent of precincts report. Carter claims moral victory and plans active Massachusetts campaign while facing Wallace test in Florida.
In Columbus supporters weigh Reagan bid in Ohio with the state GOP backing Ford for the June 8 primary. Sen. Lukens says talks with Reagan aides may yield an accommodation short of a full split slate, while Ohio Republican leaders rule out mixed slates and keep party machinery available to Reagan backers.
