Ohio Transportation Chief J Phillip Richley barred political activity by department staff after criticising use of his employees by the state Democratic party. An authoritative source said the move aims to keep agency operations free from political influence.
Four top Ohio Democratic party staff members quit after Executive Director David Meeker was dismissed. Directors Hugh Clark F Michael Lory and Daniel Helmick resigned following a staff meeting with party chairman William Lavelle. Mary Jane Vene also resigned after alleging Lavelle engaged in unethical behavior.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate James D. Nolan lost his bid for injunctions against the Ohio Democratic Party over using party funds to back endorsed candidates in the May primary. A Franklin County judge denied the request, while a source described tensions with Richley over state employees’ involvement in political activities and compliance with the Federal Campaign Practices Act.
A late night fire gutted the pupil records area of a West Front wing, with $100000 damage feared. Witnesses saw four youths in a dark car flee east on Girard after calling in the alarm. The blaze followed a prior incident on Feb 9 1973 blamed on a glass fire bomb.

A subpoena commanding President Nixon to testify at the California burglary trial of a former White House aide has been sent to the special Watergate prosecutor for action. The DC Superior Court clerk forwarded it to acting U.S. Attorney Earl J. Silbert for handling after a mail delay.
