In Atlanta AP report a 42 year old father of two Robert Cheshire set himself alight in his car after threatening to burn himself if his estranged wife did not return. Police say he saturated the vehicle with a flammable liquid and fought off bystanders as he died.
Fire destroyed the main Cathalia Hotel building in Ellenville near here on Sunday. Two hotel employees were injured as flames began in the first floor dining room. Officials estimate damage at 150000 dollars as eighty people fled into subfreezing temperatures.
Washington reports a spreading Asian influenza wave with pneumonia and influenza deaths exceeding epidemic thresholds in 108 cities. Elderly, chronically ill, and pregnant women are most at risk. Confirmed cases appear in Kansas Illinois North Carolina and DC with broader suspected cases in several states.
Washington AP reports the Senate ends its antifilibuster fight and aligns its legislative day with the calendar. After adjourning for the first time in 32 weeks, Feb 11 now matches the new date for the Senate, ending Jan 15 as the leg. day.
Athens reader: Darrel Fierce a 50 year old coal miner from Athens County faces arraignment on first degree murder charges after admitting he believed his brother Loren Fierce of Glouster poisoned his lunch. Loren died from a gunshot wound Saturday night while with his wife at an inn in Buchtel. Darrel was captured at his father’s home. Sheriff Harold Shields noted the arrest and his claim of poisoning fears.
The American freighter Santo Cerro arrived in Havana with a $2 million cargo of medicines. Three American Red Cross officials supervised unloading the third major payment to Fidel Castro for Bay of Pigs prisoners release.

An unidentified man about 55 years old climbed the wall near Tablerock House and leapt into the Niagara River as hundreds watched, plunging to his death. The Sunday incident occurred in icy waters at Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls Ontario.
An Ohio soldier, Willie J. Turman of Columbus, was killed in a snow slick curve crash near Martinsville Indiana. Six others were injured as Turman drove one of two cars in the collision. Turman was stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky.
The forecast calls for low normal temperatures across Ohio rest of the week. Snow flurries are expected tonight and tomorrow with up to an inch accumulation in parts. Yesterday’s high reached 35 degrees and low 33, while today’s low was 25 at 8 am. Weekend precipitation totaled 0.22 inches of rain snow and sleet.
