Moscow reports that the Soviet government ordered NBC to close its Moscow bureau after a program about Premier Khrushchev. Reports from Tehran say Iraq's new military rulers arm civilians in Baghdad and Basra to combat Communist agitation after the overthrow of Premier Kassem. Police shot at 3,000 demonstrators in Basra, with 250 killed, as curfews and strikes spread. Combat reached Basra, Mosul had earlier violence, while Kurds in the north paused their civil war in Switzerland. The Soviet Union, United States, and Britain all recognized the new regime.
Four Coast Guard planes joined a wide search in the Yucatan Channel and adjacent 30,000 square miles for the missing 524 foot tanker Marine Sulphur Queen carrying 39 men. The ship departed Beaumont Texas ten days ago bound for Norfolk Virginia and had not arrived by five days past due. The last radio message from the tanker did not indicate trouble and rough seas hindered progress through the Florida Straits.
