Youth recalls Russian uranium mines in Germany
Helmut Wunderlich, a 20 year old Columbus native, described his four months in a Russian controlled uranium mine near Oberschlam in 1947. He recounted escape attempts, border police detentions, a mine explosion that killed Germans, and eventual repatriation with American help. He noted a village mining area buried by ore extraction and compared farming yields to pasture.
