President Truman warned that prices are rising so rapidly a crash is inevitable unless government steps in to halt them. He called for urgent measures to curb inflation and stabilize the economy amid wartime price pressures.
President Truman told reporters that Republican plans to slash the 39.7 billion dollar budget will fail. He noted past promises to cut funds yielded no real change and described the 2.5 billion dollar target as mere conversation.
Fresh snow blankets a wide area from the Midwest to New England as the cold snap persists. Snow belts disrupt transportation and close schools while some drought relief arrives in California. New York Navy oil release delayed until distribution planned. Temperatures dip to near zero in upstate New York.
Marvin T. Clark, city commission chairman, urged autoists to keep cars off downtown streets overnight. Street workers under Superintendent George Class will start at midnight to clear snow, and parking restrictions aim to facilitate removal.

The haul included a two year old birthday card, a newspaper clipping dated Oct 6, an 18 day diet, and three earrings. The prize was a purse flash light to help Mrs Rank locate items.
Middleton residents dig out after an avalanche of snow with depths from eight to ten inches. Forecasters warn of lower temperatures and more snow tonight and Friday indicating a continuing wintry spell.
The Gas and Electric Service manager Thea Arch Robinson announced that local industries are asked to reduce gas consumption to ten percent of normal requirements in response to an emergency.
Flooding and warm melt created sticky mush on Middleton Streets. Roads became impassable, delaying bus routes and prompting school closures in Butler and Warren Counties.
In Belpre a Baltimore and Ohio passenger train struck an automobile near the Carson home, killing E. P. Carson considered a Porterfield turkey raiser, and his sons Eddie 18 George 15 and John 12. The car was dragged 100 yards along the tracks and stopped 50 yards from the house. The father died shortly after at Parkersburg hospital. The boys were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Mrs Fay Hart Meyer wife of Dr Karl Meyer medical superintendent of Cook County institutions told AP she found 10500 in 500 bills in her safe deposit box at First National Bank of Highland Park. The money had been missing six years from a retired cosmetics salesman’s box and she thinks it was found in a bank booth and later stored with papers at Ocean Springs Mississippi.
A general alarm blaze at Delivery Inc in Columbus destroyed 82 cars trucks and school buses and thousands of packages. Proprietor William Dutcher estimated up to 500000 in damage with a mechanic blamed for dropping a welding tool and a gasoline tank explosion hindering firefighters. James Boyd, 56, janitor, remained missing as crews searched the rear building area.
Two children aged 4 and 3 suffocated when a box-like auto trailer addition burned where they slept. Their step-brother, 17, was burned rescuing them. The family, including six other children and the parents, were asleep as the blaze started, apparently from a kerosene lamp explosion.
Ohio voters will see two Republican marquee contests Taft versus Stassen for national delegates and a gubernatorial clash between ex Mayors Lausche of Cleveland and Ray Miller. Democrats field a mix including former Atty. Gen. Hugh Duffy and Robert Cox in competitive statewide races.
Gen. Johannes Blaskowitz aged 64 leapt from a tier in the Nuremberg prison as he awaited trial for war crimes. He died from injuries at the US Military Hospital after investigators opened case against 14 German leaders in the second major war crimes trial at Nuremberg.
Fire at Conrad Motors in Springfield destroyed the building and 22 automobiles. Fire Chief Grover L. Frock estimated damage at 130000 dollars and blamed a gas heater while a breaking gas main hampered firefighters. Patrolman James McGuiff raised the alarm at 4 am after an explosion. Fire control was achieved by 6 30 am.
Three persons were injured last night when a car driven by Charles M. Ruckman 23 Toledo crashed into a farm bureau truck driven by Howard A. Illig 28 Cincinnati on Route 4 at LeBourdeville Hill. Frank Kelly 35 San Francisco, a passenger, suffered possible fractured back and was hospitalized. Ruckman and another passenger William Brady 24 Chicago were treated for cuts and bruises and released. Patrolmen noted the two injured passengers in Ruckman s car appeared and hitched a ride with umn.
The Wallace for President campaign committee accused a Washington newspaper report of implying a Gestapo like police force. The telegram to President Truman demanded investigation of a blacklist allegedly used by federally employed Washington police against attendees of certain public meetings. Lieutenant Harry C. Blackman stated his special investigation squad is not investigating Wallace supporters.
Lakeview Georgia coach Walter Bowland and principal John Burks say they are undaunted and ready to shoot it out if the Ku Klux Klan returns after a confrontation with a student led to a warrant and later withdrawal. Hooded Klansmen burned a cross near Bowland’s home on January 16, Bowland’s wife toppled it and called the attackers yellow cowards. Sheriff Jim Moreland refused protection and urged Bowland to avoid provocation. Bowland has collected shotguns and an automatic rifle for defense, while Burks says he will shoot if threatened. The fight began when student Marion Hayes objected to chores assigned to basketball players.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee wrapped up bicameral hearings on the European Recovery Program with over 100 witnesses heard since January. Chairman Vandenberg announced executive sessions to start Monday and aims to have legislation ready by February 18. UAW President Reuther warned of a creeping threat to recovery and living standards, urging reconsideration of funding levels, while Senator Ball predicted cost cuts and scrutiny of Britain’s share of 1.75 billion dollars.
