New Middletown Tax Rate Hints at Higher Levy

The Hamilton rate is officially set at 28 per thousand, while Middletown’s tentative rate is about 22.62 per thousand, reflecting potential 17 percent valuation increases ordered by the State Tax Board. If the 17 percent rise is blocked, the rate could reach around 23.85, with the actual 1953 bills not issued until rates are final. County Auditor R. H. Smith notes the Hamilton cut stems from retired city bonds, though the rate remains tentative amid a court challenge to valuation boosts.
