Truman to ask Congress for 73 percent billion in new appropriations
An administration source says President Truman will urge the new Congress to approve about 73% billion dollars in new appropriations for next year. He projects overall spending slightly under 80 billion, with defense around 51 billion and total outgo near 75 billion. The forecast includes deficits of about five to six billion on a cash basis by next June, with a two to three billion cash deficit in another measure, reflecting lags and revisions before Eisenhower takes office.

Officials Feared Political Football Delaying UN Report
Justice Department official Roy Cohn testified before a House subcommittee that a federal grand jury report on communists within the United Nations was delayed last fall to avoid it becoming a political football before the election. He cited high level decisions by McGranery, Murray, Malone, and Lane to postpone until December, amid concerns over timing and public reaction. Four Justice officials and five jurors described interviews with roughly 100 UN staffers, many invoking the Fifth Amendment. 18 disloyal employees have since been fired.
