Fourth day of coal strike prompts talks on stability

Chief federal mediator Wayne Horvitz said both sides exchanged proposals and ideas as they reviewed them during the fourth negotiating session since the strike began. Industry sources noted focus on greater labor stability at coal mines amid past wildcat actions. The strike has halved soft coal output, with some non union mines closed by pickets or sympathy actions. Isolated violence occurred in Ohio near Pomeroy with gunfire and a firebomb. no injuries.
