Wholesale price gains cooled vs October but remained inflationary led by a 3 percent rise in farm products. Industrial commodities up 0.4 percent as food costs drive the two month jump. consumer price index rose 0.3 percent in each of the last three months.
The Middletown area faces rain and snow mixed tonight with colder air and lows near 20. This morning's 14 degree low follows a 17 degree high on Wednesday. Friday brings windy, colder weather with a chance of snow and a mid 20s high. Weekend mostly cloudy with some snow possible Sunday and Monday. Bitter cold to linger with highs 10 to 18 and overnight lows 5 to 10, slight moderation by Monday.
A winter storm watch spans Ohio with heavy snow warnings in the northwest and lighter accumulations elsewhere. Four to six inches expected in the northwest and one to three inches in the rest of the state. Toledo logged seven below zero, with record lows in several counties. A warm front later may mix snow briefly before cold air returns Friday. A coroner reports findings in a separate dead case in Seneca County.
Pleasant Hills Community Church in McComb Ohio faced a second break in in two months as thieves stole the organ draperies tapestry three candleholders lamps an electric wall clock a vacuum cleaner and Christmas decorations. Rev Betty Neff and congregation offer prayers for the thieves noting the hardship of stealing from a church. Only draperies and clock will be replaced for now. Police not yet disclosed any arrests.
Frigid air masses pinched the nation with wind chills reaching 80 below zero at Cut Bank and 60 below in Great Falls Montana. Three Louisville deaths were linked to the cold as 22 Kentucky districts closed schools and officials reported a record low 22 in Columbus Georgia and 50 in Miami Beach Florida. Around Maryland heavy snow and power outages affected Baltimore County while North Dakota faced subzero readings and gusts over 30 mph.
Gastone Zacche of 3012 Flemming Road had a busy week after selling his used car via Journal classifieds and winning $1000 in the Scrambl contest. An official call confirmed his grand prize as the newsroom noted the winning puzzle used surnames of staff members. He expressed disbelief at the win.
The Chew Newspapers of Ohio ran six weeks of the Scrambl contest across Xenia Piqua Franklin and Middletown drawing heavy reader participation. More than 110000 entries were received with over 70000 from Middletown journal readers. Weekly certificates totaling 9100 and city grand prizes of 2500 cash were awarded across four cities.
The Northwest School District in Cincinnati will shut down after classes today as the board rejected using a new law to borrow against 1978 state revenues. Superintendent James W. Jones warned a $1.7 million cut next year would devastate the district’s educational program.
