Catlettsburgs Boom Days Ended With Prohibition and Decline
In Catlettsburg Kentucky a timber boom along the Big Sandy flourished by 1900 with nine sawmills and a bustling river trade. The town boasted saloons and side wheelers until a 1917 18 ice gorge disaster and Prohibition after 1919 sharply reduced activity, cutting population from about 8000 to under 5000 by 1933.
