Welfare costs drive county push for constitutional amendment
Butler County commissioners back a statewide constitutional amendment to make the state cover welfare costs. They cite rising local contributions, from $801,000 in 1977 to an estimated $960,000 in 1978, and note the cost doubles every four years. They hope HB 409 would freeze county welfare funding at 1973 levels. The panel also approved a flash flood warning system with the National Weather Service and heard a tuberculosis program report seeking $183,000 for 11 months with 16,851 patients treated.
