Common Cause calls for abolition of atomic energy committee

Common Cause released a 38 page report charging the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy with serving as a champion for the nuclear power industry. The group says the 18 member panel ignores safety concerns and critics, favors industry and states with heavy nuclear investments, and has limited public witnesses while protecting federal investments.

Officers Club Destroyed by Blast at Rhein-Main Base

An explosion and fire ripped through the Officers Club at Rhein-Main U.S. Air Force Base during lunch hour in West Germany. Three people were injured, with the most serious a broken arm. Investigators considered a bombing, but there was no prior bomb threat. The one-story wooden building was a total loss after flames spread. firefighters from the base and German crews battled the blaze for hours.

Cloudy Skies Forecast With Snow Chance Tonight

The region will see cloudy skies tonight with a 40 percent chance of light snow and a low in the teens. Thursday stays cloudy with a 30 percent chance of snow flurries and a high in the 20s. Yesterday peaked at 25 with an overnight low of 17, and the extended outlook calls for fair weather Friday and Saturday with a chance of rain or snow on Sunday.

National Christmas tree to retire after this season

A 44 foot Colorado blue spruce, the national Christmas tree, is dying and will be retired next year. Park Service ranger George Berklaey said workers crane adornments as the 45 year old tree nears the end. Transplanted in 1973 from Shickshinny Pennsylvania, it stood at the Ellipse before the White House for the Pageant of Peace. Lower branches are dying while upper tones stay green. branches from a 25 foot blue spruce from Silver Spring Maryland are wired on to fill gaps.
