Charley Kills Three, Injures Four in Cuba Coastal Path

Hurricane Charley swept across Cuba after midnight with gusts near 125 mph devastating Havana province. At least three deaths were reported in Havana, with 65 buildings collapsed and over 500 damaged as Surgidero de Batabano endured 10 foot waves and waist high floodwater.

Army chief hints Israel could cede Golan Heights for peace

In an interview published Friday Lt. Gen. Moshe Yaalon says from a military view Israel could withdraw from all of the Golan Heights to reach a peace agreement with Syria. He cautions Syria remains a threat with missiles and chemical capabilities. Meanwhile a Palestinian gunman killed Shlomo Miller outside Itamar. the attacker was a Palestinian policeman and claimed by Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Israeli troops demolished the gunman's two story house leaving nine homeless. Dozens of prominent Palestinians signed a reform manifesto calling for deep change and government accountability, published in the three largest Palestinian dailies.

Afghan forces arrest 26 for Taliban links in Shahjoy

In Shahjoy district Zabul province 26 Afghan security forces were arrested for suspected Taliban ties. The post at a highway checkpoint near Kandahar was manned by the detainees who allegedly aided robberies and extortion. The commander fled. custody of the suspects lies with American forces.

Retired hangman called for India's rare execution

An 84 year old hangman, aided by his son and grandson, returns from retirement to carry out India's first execution in nine years. Dhananjay Chatterjee, 39, was convicted in 1991 for raping and smothering a 14 year old girl Hetal Parekh. His appeals failed and clemency was denied by President Kalam.

Italy urged EU unity as African migrants drown and seek relief

Rome faces a new deadly voyage as more than 70 Africans were found aboard a wooden boat south of Sicily with one dead on arrival. Italian officials estimate 100 boarded, 73 survived, amid calls for a European response to illegal immigration. The incident renews pressure for coordinated EU action and possible immigration centers in North Africa.
