Athens hosts the first Summer Olympic Games since September 11 2001 with a laser lit ceremony. The event marks the revival of the Olympic movement in Greece 108 years after its rebirth in Athens. Preparations included new roads subways trains and venues as officials declared readiness.

Two Middletown police officers were injured Thursday morning during a pursuit of a stalking suspect. Officers Kenny Rogers and Tom Shores collided as Rogers attempted a U turn on Main Street. Franklin voters will decide a merger with the township on November 2. The 10 member commission approved placing the measure on the ballot and plans to mail about 8,000 merger documents to registered voters. If approved, a new city of Franklin would form January 1, 2006, with eight police officers and two firefighters added and most services merged.
